RTI...A new thought on the tiers of RTI

Kelly had a blog entry about the need for more attention for those students who fall in the gifted area which got me thinking.  Why can't there be a 4th tier. This tier (1+, just a suggestion), would function something like tier 2 for those students who are needing more intervention. If students do significantly above average on the 1st tier, then they are moved to this 1+ tier which will provide them with a more  challenging curriculum.  It seems like this would better address the needs of these students and would hopefully offer them more than most of the current once a week gifted programs do now.  Just a thought.  What are your thoughts on this?

  1. Debi, that is an excellent idea. Though the intervention would be dramatically different, those students need that extra attention as well. I'm going to direct your attention to Issue 20 in our Taking Sides book about gifted education. The little girl, Annalisee, at the introduction of the "Yes" section did not get her needs met at school due to her high achievement; 145+ IQ which puts her in the 0.1% of the population. I have to agree that we are not reaching these students like we should. My school system is trying to phase out the gifted program. That's right; PHASE OUT!!! So, are we leaving these children behind? What does NCLB say about this issue? What about IDEIA?

  2. I love this idea! And I also liked reading T's comment...I think we are in fact leaving these children behind! I already have a pretty high opinion of RTI, but I think your idea could make it even better!
