Teacher Tenure. Where do you stand?

When the issue of teacher tenure comes up I have mixed feelings.  I am in my 23rd year teaching but it is my 3rd year at my new school and therefore I am approaching tenure at the completion of this year.  I am a teacher that believes that every teacher should be evaluated to help improve the teaching that is going on in our classrooms.  I for one am open to suggestions that will improve my teaching and I think that we all can learn new approaches and techniques no matter how long we have been teaching.  I have concerns with tenure at times because I see a few teachers that seem to hide behind their tenure and feel that they can not be touched.  I think this view takes the focus off of teaching children. I believe that we as teachers should always strive to improve and reach for better ways to reach and teach our students. What do you think about tenure?

  1. I agree with you! I do not know a lot about tuenure, due to the fact I'm not a teacher yet! But I have heard many of the things you've said taking place in schools. I agree that every teacher should be evaluated to help improve the teaching in our schools. Teachers should not "hide beind their tenure" this is only hurting the children! Teachers should be eager to improve their teaching strategies.

  2. All teachers are striving to make tenure. I would be lying if I said I didn't care if I got tenure or not. Job security feels good. But I know what you are saying. When a teacher receives tenure it is really hard to get rid of them; even if they are a poor teacher. I think there should be an objective procedure in evaluating those trite and passe tenured teachers.

  3. I have seen how some teachers act once they get tenure....it is like they don't have to worry about how they are teaching anymore. I believe there should still be evaluation procedures and observations conducted on tenure teachers as well.

  4. Personally, I do not mind the observations and evaluations. I feel that they make me a stronger teacher. However, I have known teachers once having received tenure believed that was it, job security for life.

I am all for more frequent evaluations. It keeps us on our toes and mindful of new strategies to keep our students moving forward!

  5. I think frequent evaluations need to be in place to help teachers improve and keep up to date with their teaching strategies. I understand that some teachers might see tenure as a way to slack off, but for a lot of the situations and teachers I know it gives them a sense of security and comfort knowing that they have received tenure. I know for me one day if I am able to receive tenure I will not slack off from my teaching; instead, tenure will just give me comfort knowing that I can stay at the school and continue to invest my time and energy within that school.
